Members of Woodstock's William G. Long Senior Center spent three months making 300 dolls for Cherokee County foster children. How to help or foster.

Members of Woodstock’s William G. Long Senior Center have made 300 dolls by hand for children in foster care in Cherokee County.

The seniors spent three months on the project, the City of Woodstock said in a news release. They sewed, assembled and personalized each doll. The city said one member also hand-crafted lizards and snakes so that boys in care would get something made for them too.

The finished dolls were donated Sept. 24 to Sylvia Freeman, a representative of the Cherokee County Department of Family and Children Services, known as DFCS. The city said the donation was part of the center’s annual service project.

Why 300

More than 300 children are in foster care in Cherokee County, according to the city’s release. That means the seniors made close to one doll for every child in the county’s care.

What it means for you

DFCS is still looking for families who can foster, the city said. That includes full-time foster homes and supplemental care, which gives children and their foster families extra support.

If you want to help:

  • Foster a child: call Cherokee County DFCS at 1-877-210-KIDS (1-877-210-5437) or read about the process at Foster Georgia.
  • Give essential items: DFCS also takes donations of essential items for children, through the same number.
  • Join the senior center: the William G. Long Senior Center is run by the City of Woodstock. Call City Hall at 770-592-6000 for membership and activities.
